25/11/2018 The Plastic Attack Movement Hits Ibiza!

Plastic Attack Ibiza
Ibiza, November 24, 2018, Members of the Plastic Free Ibiza movement and dozens of consumers gathered at the Mercadona de Puig d’en Valls, one of Spain’s largest supermarket chains, asking the supermarket to take measures against the excessive use of single use plastic in food products.

The action carried out, involved families with children, young adults, seniors and also many of the shops customers. After leaving the establishment with their everyday food shopping, they ‘stripped’ their purchases of the unwanted plastic packaging and returned it to the supermarket in a simple, effective and direct form of protest. In addition, the movement had a stand with alternatives to plastic on offer to customers to use such as cotton and reusable bags, glass and metal food and drink containers which the food could be repackaged in before being taken home. This action, now recognised as being a ‘Plastic Attack‘ , has spread organically worldwide through concerned environmental groups and active members of the general public who have simply had enough of all this plastic waste, and the pollution that it’s causing.

In an effort to highlight the environmental problems this over-packaging of food is causing on the island, in the sea and across the planet, the activists of the ‘Plastic Free Ibiza‘ movement did a completely “normal” purchase in the supermarket. They eliminated all the unnecessary packaging, returned it straight back to the supermarket, asking them to change their policy and to stop selling their products wrapped in this excessive plastic. The group have hailed the event a success and are now planning further ‘Plastic Attacks’ on the Island.

News Giant CNN Publishes Article on Plastic Attacks!

CNN initially contacted us asking if we could to provide more information on how the plastic attack movement started in the UK.  We quickly passed on details to Alex Morss from OneByOneConservation one of the original groups involved in organising the first ever plastic attacks which began here in the UK.

Alex then took part in an interview CNN, the result is the very positive and informative article below published on the 2nd of August 2018 by CNN written by Mark Tutton.

How 'plastic attacks' on supermarkets became a global movement

hand back plastic

“London (CNN)When a group of concerned citizens started protesting plastic packaging at supermarkets, they had no idea that their actions would spark a global movement.

Earlier this year the activists in the UK began organizing “plastic attacks,” where customers unwrap their shopping in a supermarket and return single-use packaging to the store.
“We decided it was time to show supermarkets just how many shoppers were concerned about the amount of plastic packaging on their food,” explained Alex Morss, who helped organize some of the first events.”
